Smartphone Condition Grades, Explained

What terms like Grade A, Open Box, and For Parts typically mean, and why grading consistency matters more than the labels themselves.

There's no single industry-wide standard for smartphone condition grading, which is exactly why it's worth asking any seller to define their own grading scale in writing. Common tiers include New/Sealed, Open Box, Grade A (excellent, light or no cosmetic wear), Grade B (good, moderate wear), Grade C (fair, heavier wear), and For Parts (not guaranteed to power on or function).

What matters most isn't which label a seller uses, but whether they apply it consistently. A seller who grades conservatively — and occasionally under-promises — is more valuable long-term than one whose 'Grade A' sometimes means Grade B.

Ask whether grading covers functionality (does it power on, charge, and connect to a network) as well as cosmetics (screen condition, housing wear). Some grading systems only describe cosmetic condition and leave functional status as a separate flag — know which one you're looking at.
