Buying MacBooks in Bulk: Intel vs Apple Silicon

How to choose between Intel-era and Apple silicon MacBooks when buying laptops for resale, schools or a business fleet.

· 6 min read

MacBooks are among the most reliable laptops to resell. They are well built, hold their value and are in demand from students, creatives and businesses. The biggest decision when buying in bulk is which processor generation to choose.

Intel MacBooks (2018–2020)

Intel-based MacBooks are the most affordable way to supply macOS laptops. They are well suited to web browsing, office work and education. Keep in mind that Apple's software support for Intel Macs is winding down, so they are best for price-focused buyers rather than customers who want years of updates.

Apple silicon MacBooks (late 2020 onward)

MacBooks with Apple's M-series chips offer much longer battery life, cooler and quieter operation, and strong performance for creative and professional work. They command higher prices and attract buyers who plan to keep their laptop for several years.

Configuration is everything

Memory and storage affect both performance and resale value. A lot that looks cheap can be hard to sell if the machines have too little RAM or storage for your customers. Always confirm the processor, memory, storage and screen size of the units in a box before paying.

Plan for setup

For business and school deployments, buying a single model year per box simplifies imaging, device management and spare parts. Check that machines are free of activation locks and management profiles before they go to customers.
